How to use this directory well

Write to the body that has the power to act. Ombudsmen and regulators can investigate a named case once the organisation you complained about has had a chance to answer. Commissions and treaty bodies work on patterns rather than single cases, so give them dates, numbers and documents. Campaigning charities cannot investigate, but they can take a well-evidenced issue into the press, the courts or a select committee.

Keep one letter to one issue, say plainly what you want done, and include the reference numbers of any earlier correspondence. A short, specific letter written in your own words is read; a mass-produced one usually is not.
