How your postal code decides your riding

Canada is divided into federal electoral districts, usually called ridings. Each elects one MP to the House of Commons in Ottawa, and that MP answers to the people living inside the boundary. Ridings were last redistributed after the 2021 census, so the seat covering your street may have changed name or shape since you last wrote.

We resolve your postal code through Represent, the open civic API run by OpenNorth, then show the sitting member. Where the data covers it you will also see your provincial member and your municipal council, because most day-to-day services are not federal at all.

What a Canadian MP can do

An MP can vote on and amend federal legislation, put questions to a minister on the record, and intervene with a federal department on your behalf. That last one matters most in practice: immigration files, Employment Insurance, veterans' benefits, passports and Canada Revenue Agency disputes all move faster once a constituency office is asking.

What they cannot do is direct a provincial ministry, a school board or a city hall. Health care, education, housing and highways are provincial; garbage, zoning and transit are usually municipal. Writing to the wrong order of government costs weeks.

Writing once you have the name

Give your full address so the office can confirm you live in the riding, name one issue, and say plainly what you want done. Two paragraphs in your own words outperform a page of campaign wording — identical copies arriving from many senders are counted once.

We check your letter is genuinely yours, deliver it from our own domain with your name and reply-to attached, and delete the text after five weeks.
